The Maxis-National Press Club 2nd Merdeka Rally for Humanity

In conjunction with the 49th Merdeka Day celebration, the National Press Club, together with Maxis Communications Berhad (“Maxis”), will be holding its 2nd Maxis-National Press Club Merdeka Rally for Humanity, which has been organized to benefit six (6) charity homes in Klang Valley, Selangor and Pahang and a community of Orang Asli in Gombak.

When
The event will be held on Saturday, 16-17 September 2006 from 8.00 a.m. to 10.30 p.m. The tentative itinerary is as attached in Appendix 1.

What
This Maxis-National Press Club 2nd Merdeka Rally for Humanity will involve around 150 vehicles and super bikes with an estimated 500 people participating in the rally.

The convoy of approximately 150 vehicles comprises:
a. vehicles of Maxis employees
b. vehicles of members of the National Press Club
c. vehicles of participating sponsors
d. vehicles from participating Press/Media organizations

Participants are welcome to form teams comprising family members or office colleagues and children are also welcome to participate. There will be activities for children to participate in as well.

All participating vehicles will be decorated with collaterals of the event comprising:

a. A rally flag placed on the hood of the vehicle
b. Side car stickers on both sides
c. Rear windscreen stickers
d. “Jalur Gemilang” proudly flying on top of the vehicles

Why
The objective of this initiative is to acknowledge the spirit of Merdeka and to share this spirit with our less fortunate friends and the community. This initiative will also promote national integration and foster a more caring attitude amongst Malaysians.

How
The orphanages include:
1.Rumah Solehah, Bandar Tun Razak, KL;
2.Rumah Shepherd Center Foundation, Kajang, Selangor;
3.Rumah Tunas Harapan, Kuala Selangor;
4.Taman Sinar Harapan, Kuala Kubu, Selangor;
5.Rumah Kanak-kanak Tengku Ampuan Fatimah, Kuantan, Pahang; and
6.Rumah Penyayang, Pekan

Orang Asli Community in Gombak:
Facts
Population – 3000 orang asli
Scattered in miles 12 and 18 in Gombak area
Miles 16 Orang Asli is headed by Tok Batin Ulang bin Sitang
Main occupation – Employees of JHEOA, Genting Highlands and factories nearby.
3 main ethnic groups:
- Negrito – Kensiu, Kintak, Lanoh, Jahai, Mendriq, Bateq
- Senoi – Temiar, Semai, Semoq Beri, Che Wong, Jahut, Mahmeri
- Melayu Proto – Temuan, Semelai, Jakun, Orang Kanak, Orang Kuala, Orang Seletar

The only settlement in the world with Orang Asli Hospital managed by JHEOA

Last years event was just up to KLIA with about 10 sponsors. This year there's over 30 sponsor/donors with a ride up and possible overnight stay in Kuantan.
